to appreciate artistic talent… try it yourself

I don’t believe it’s easy to truly appreciate artistic talent until you have given it a try yourself to see what you can accomplish. For example, when you listen to Stairway to Heaven or Hotel California, you know those are famous guitar pieces. But begin studying the guitar yourself, and you realize the work that goes into achieving the skill it takes to perform those masterpieces.

Obviously, seeing color, understanding proportions, anatomy, and knowing the 3D software to create art is just as demanding. I have spent hours in Blender, Corel and various paint programs and have enjoyed my own art on the iPad, but my level of technique, experience and talent is nowhere near what is required for game dev.

Thankfully, we have plenty of resources to draw upon for 3D assets and art! I’ll be going over my recent explorations in an upcoming blog post.

Excited about unreal engine 5!

Epic Games released Unreal 5 beta for game developers to play with. Because this project only started in 2021, I figured we’d jump right in and start with Unreal 5 from the get-go.  Advancements over Unreal 4 include an integrated Quixel bridge to access Megascans, world partitioning, new dynamic lighting and realtime handling of a staggering amount of polygons!

Website still under development. I needed a blog as a way to think my way through game development and record my progress. In the process, I discovered this amazing art online. If anyone knows who the artist is, please let me know!
